Business Days vs Calendar Days

Why 5 business days is not 5 days, and how to convert between the two without getting caught out.

By the Universal Date Calculator Team

Two ways of counting time

A calendar day is any day on the calendar, including Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. A business day, also called a working day or banking day, is a day on which business is normally done: Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. The same number of days can mean very different lengths of time depending on which one is used.

Five calendar days is five days after the start. Five business days is one working week, which usually means seven calendar days, and more if a holiday falls in between. The difference is easy to forget when you read a promise quickly.

The 5-to-7 rule of thumb

Because a week has 5 business days and 7 calendar days, you can convert with a ratio of 7 to 5, or 1.4. Ten business days is about 14 calendar days, twenty is about 28, and thirty is about 42. Going the other way, a 30-day period contains about 21 business days.

These are averages. The exact figure depends on the weekday on which you start. Twenty business days after Thursday 22 October 2026 is Thursday 19 November 2026, exactly 28 days later. Thirty business days from the same date is Thursday 3 December 2026, exactly 42 days later. Starting from a Thursday, whole weeks of business days give whole weeks of calendar days, and only the leftover days make the difference.

Where each kind is used

Business days dominate in commerce. Shipping estimates, bank transfers, refunds, customer support replies and service levels are usually promised in business days. A transfer that takes 3 business days started on a Friday arrives on the Wednesday, not on Monday.

Calendar days dominate in rights and consumer rules. Cooling-off periods, warranty durations, notice periods and trial periods are often set in calendar days, which keep running on weekends. A 14-day withdrawal period does not stop on Saturday.

Always read which kind is meant. If a document says days without saying which, it normally means calendar days, but a delivery estimate can mean either. When it matters, ask.

How holidays change the count

Business days exclude public holidays, and these differ by country and region. A range that includes a long holiday weekend can lose one or two business days compared with the plain Monday-to-Friday count. At the end of December and around Easter the effect is largest.

A calculator that only knows weekends will overstate the number of business days. The correction is easy: subtract one business day for each public holiday that falls on a Monday to Friday inside the range. Holidays on weekends change nothing.

Banks add a further variation, because the banking days of two countries can differ. A payment between countries can be delayed by a holiday on either side.

Converting between them in practice

To convert business days to calendar days, divide by 5 to get weeks, multiply by 7, and add a margin for the leftover days and holidays. Ten business days is two weeks, 14 days, and 15 or 16 days if there is a holiday.

To convert calendar days to business days, divide by 7, multiply by 5, and handle the leftover days one at a time. Forty-five days is 6 weeks and 3 days, so 30 business days plus up to 3 more, depending on the weekdays involved.

For anything you will rely on, use a calculator, not a ratio. The ratio is a good estimate and a poor guarantee.

Writing it down clearly

If you are promising a delivery or setting a deadline, spell out the kind of day. Within 5 business days, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays is clear. Within 7 days is not.

If you are on the receiving side, convert the promise into a date as soon as you see it, and note both the date and the kind of day you used. A date is unambiguous in a way that a number of days never is.

A worked example

A shop promises delivery within 10 business days and you order on Friday 23 October 2026. The clock starts on the next business day, Monday 26 October, and ten business days later is Friday 6 November 2026. That is 14 calendar days after the order, or 2 weeks, and if a public holiday falls inside the range, the delivery window moves to Monday 9 November.

Compare that with 10 calendar days. Ten calendar days after 23 October 2026 is 2 November 2026, which is four days earlier. If you planned around the shorter figure, you would be waiting for a parcel that is not yet late.

The same logic applies to refunds. A refund within 5 business days of a return received on a Thursday is expected the following Thursday, not on Tuesday.

Using the calculator

On the days-between tab, the main result is the number of calendar days, and the rows below show the workdays and the weekend days in the same range. That gives you both counts for the same period at once.

On the Add or subtract tab, you can add business days directly, using the Workdays field, and see the resulting date and weekday. Use the days field for calendar days. Doing the same calculation both ways shows exactly how much the two differ.
