How Many Days Until a Date? Counting Down
Count the days left until Christmas, a holiday, an exam or a deadline, and see the same span in weeks and workdays.

A countdown is a date difference
Asking how many days are left until an event is the same as asking for the days between today and the event date. The start date is today and the end date is the event. The answer is the number of midnights you still have to cross.
If today is Thursday 22 October 2026 and the date is Friday 25 December 2026, there are 64 days left. That is 9 weeks and 1 day, and the weekday moves from Thursday to Friday because 64 days is 63 plus 1.
Reading the number correctly
A countdown can be read two ways, and the difference is one day. The plain count is the days that pass before the date arrives. If the event is tomorrow, the count is 1. On the day itself the count is 0.
Some people say there are 65 days until Christmas because they also count today. Both are fine, as long as you know which one you used. For planning, the plain difference is the more useful, because it equals the number of full days you still have to prepare.
Weeks, workdays and weekends
Days are not always the best unit. For a deadline at work you may care about workdays, and for a pregnancy or a training plan you may care about weeks. The 64 days to Christmas 2026 are 46 workdays and 18 weekend days.
Workdays here mean Monday to Friday. Public holidays that fall on weekdays are not removed, so in a country with holidays between now and then the real number of working days is lower.
Weeks are useful for anything with a rhythm. If you plan to train for 9 weeks or save a fixed amount each week, the weeks left tell you how many instalments remain.
Countdowns that cross a year
When the target date is in the next year, the calculation still works, but there is one more thing to check: whether a leap day lies in between. From 22 October 2026 to 1 January 2027 there are 71 days, and no leap day is involved. If the span crosses 29 February, add one day to a hand count.
Another case is a yearly event that has already passed this year, such as a birthday. The next occurrence is in the following year, so the end date is that date next year. The age tab of the calculator does this automatically and shows the days until the next birthday.
Common countdown questions
- Days until the end of the year: take 31 December and subtract today. From 22 October 2026 that is 70 days to 31 December, or 71 to 1 January.
- Days until a holiday: enter the holiday date for this year, or next year if it has passed.
- Days until an exam or a trip: enter the date, and read the weeks and workdays for a study or packing plan.
Moveable events need the right date for the year. Easter, for example, falls on a different date each year, and a countdown to it needs the date for the year in question.
Turning a countdown into a plan
A bare number can feel abstract. It helps to divide it. 64 days is 9 weeks, so a task that needs eight hours can be done in an hour a week with time to spare. A deadline in 20 workdays leaves four working weeks, which is easier to plan than one large block.
It also helps to set checkpoints. Half of the time left is a natural moment to review progress, and the last week is best kept free for surprises.
A countdown also works in the other direction. If you know how many days you need, subtract them from the target date to find the latest possible start. A task that needs 20 workdays and must be finished on Friday 25 December 2026 has to begin no later than 27 November 2026, and an earlier start gives you a margin.
Countdowns for common events
From Thursday 22 October 2026, Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, is 64 days away. The end of the year, 31 December 2026, is 70 days away, and New Year’s Day 2027 is 71 days away. The start of March 2027 is 130 days away.
A countdown to a birthday is the same calculation with the next occurrence of the date. If the birthday was last month, the next one is eleven months away, and the answer changes by a day if a leap day is in the span.
For an exam, a wedding or a launch, the figure that matters is often workdays, because that is when work can be done. It is worth reading both numbers before you plan.
Using the calculator
On the days-between tab, press Today next to the start date, enter the target date in the end field and read the main result. The rows below give the span in years, months and days, in weeks, in workdays and weekend days, and in hours and minutes.
If you want the day of the week for the target date as well, switch to the Day of the week tab and enter it there. Together the two answers give you everything you need for a countdown.
